Large Hybrid-Budo: Merging Tradition with Modern Science

Hybrid-Budo is a modern traditional martial art.

Through decades of experience, the system utilizes a time tested and proven formula with a modern applied scientific approach. Using the traditional martial structure present in most systems, we streamline it to focus on the intent of building functionality; not simply preserving a particular discipline.

Hybrid-Budo was inspired by decades of martial training, teaching and invaluable real world experience.

Our foundation stems from:

Shotokan

Kenpo

FMA (Filipino Martial Arts)

Ju Jutsu

Kobudo

American Kickboxing

Analytical Combat

Through the traditional framework of:

Basics (kihon)

Kinesiology (kamae)

Forms (kata)

Application (bunkai)

Drills (kumite)

Sparring (randori)

Each kata demonstrates multiple concepts that are explored by the student through drills and sparring.

The kata are schematics that the student will learn and then apply through training as they develop. The principle is memorization through application; giving a greater understanding - not just replicating movements.

Functionally is built upon layers of foundation. Stress testing is in the form of drills and sparring. Drills and sparring provide pressure in a receptive environment; this allows the student to test techniques and discover what works for them.

The ultimate goal of flow drills is not direct application but sensitivity and the experience of having been in multiple situations before and how to mitigate and answer those attacks.

Our philosophy is to provide the student with practical and effective defensive options from the outset, and with consistent training, a constant layering effect of advanced skills.

Our Dojo Symbol

Our dojo emblem symbolizes the integration of modern martial arts with traditional techniques, reflecting values like movement, combat ranges, and the balance of defense and offense. Each element represents key principles, from weaponry to personal growth and the pursuit of excellence.

Budo Karate Academy Dojo Symbol Meaning

The overlapping infinity symbol in the center represent modern martial concepts laying over traditional martial arts - we are a modern traditional martial arts Hybrid Karate-Do, The symbols do not intersect but overlap; one builds off of the other as a modern evolution.

The circles with intersecting lines represent circular and elliptical movement, jujutsu and blade work as some examples and the intersecting lines refer to the triangulation footwork of filipino martial arts.

The diamond with four triangles represent the structure of the body in a defensive posture; additionally it represents the three dimensional pyramidal base from grappling/ground fighting. The Four triangles represent the four ranges of combat: leg, arm, standup & ground grappling and weapon.

The Octagon represents weaponry as the external of our internal art. Each angle demonstrates the weapon extending from the body: Additionally, it refers to Analytical Combat and its Four Themes Theory; split in half the octagon becomes two fours: the upper and lower hemispheres of the body. Karate properly practiced should be a 50/50 art encompassing the body as a whole in defense and attack. As an example, in grappling the legs are often utilized as arms.
